When reading we DECODE the word by activating prior knowledge of letter sounds or experience based on exceptions from past experience. After reading a word multiple times our brains "photograph" the word and it enters or visual memory by creating an image of the word thus helping us to read it faster and with greater accuracy.

 

Stronger readers are able to predict words and therefore are able to gain speed and accuracy thus helping them focus on content and not just the act of reading.

 

In the most advanced stage of reading, you are able to read and comprehend content even when the writing contains multiple errors (this means you have become an English teacher)

Room 6:

We break down the word to recognize it and use context clues to figure out new words. Depending on what type of material we are reading, we ask ourselves the 5Ws and the H to figure out a text and we also visualize what we are reading to better understand it. We also make connections during our reading.

Olivia: You get information, then you process information: imagining, looking for answer, scanning and skimming, analyzing...etc.

 

Sarah: When I read, I simply imagine the meaning that the words are saying.

The level of the text, the audience (to whom you're reading), and the target (the purpose of reading).

First we look at the words, recognize the letters, see how similar they are to L1, define the words and then interpret the idea in our minds of each word and then get the final meaning.

how far do we need to go to understand how we read? you identify the letters, the symbol, the meaning. In your first language it's pretty automatic and it's finding the meaning - letter to sound to meaning. Does reading mean that we assign meaning to the words we read? we could read in another language but we don't understand. is that still reading? Is reading having comprehension? Is it still reading without any comprehension? We read to gain something with the words. first, decode, and yes, understanding and meaning next.

There's a difference between recognizing words in a L1 and decoding them in an L2.

Sometimes, reading aloud helps internalize information from an L2 source.

In terms of process, when learning an L2, one may first learn the mechanics of reading and then fill in the vocabulary.
