Teacher says: "Now let's listen for the 'snow' sound, like in 'blow' and 'snow'."

Students repeat: "Snow," "blow," "show," etc.

Step 2: Practice – Circle and Say

Teacher’s role: Read out pairs of words, and students must decide which sound (either /aʊ/ or /oʊ/) is in each word. After, students will repeat the words with the correct pronunciation.

Cow / Show

Down / Blow

Snow / How

Grow / Clown

Town / Low

Teacher says: "Which word has the /aʊ/ sound, and which word has the /oʊ/ sound?"

Students respond: "Cow is /aʊ/ and Show is /oʊ/."

Then, students repeat the words aloud.

Step 3: Sentence Drill

Teacher’s role: Read the sentence with the target sound, and students repeat after you. Focus on the proper pronunciation of "ow."

"The cow is brown and jumping down."

"We will throw the snowball."

"The clown is funny in town."

"I see a flower in the snow."

"The wind will blow and grow trees."

Step 4: Speed Drill – Say it Faster!

Teacher’s role: Say the sentences, and challenge students to say them quickly while keeping the correct sound. Start slow and gradually speed up.

"The clown is in town."

"We throw snowballs in the snow."

"The brown cow is down the road."

"The low snowflakes glow in the light."

Teacher says: "Can you say these faster? Try it!"

Students repeat faster: "The clown is in town!" etc.

Step 5: Word Sort (optional)

Teacher’s role: Provide students with a mixed list of words and ask them to sort the words based on their "ow" sound.

Words:

Cow

Show

Brown

Blow

Town

Grow

Clown

Snow

Power

Low

Teacher says: "Can you sort these words into two groups? One group for the /aʊ/ sound and one for the /oʊ/ sound."

Students sort:

/aʊ/: Cow, Brown, Town, Clown, Power

/oʊ/: Show, Blow, Grow, Snow, Low

Step 6: Review and Cool-Down

Students respond: "Cow!"

Teacher says: "Great! And who can say a word with the /oʊ/ sound?"

Students respond: "Snow!"
