I think the prepare for the negotiation is the most

complicated stage in the

negotiation process.

The reasons are:

1 - you don't know your partner and you can only make assumptions about them and their BATNA

2 - it is a beginning of the negotiation process and it will be a many stages and work ahead

3 - it is necessary to create a good first impression in the business

But if you do it successfully you have a good chance to conclude the negotiation effectively.

One of the stages in the negotiation process that I find most complicated is the "Conflict Resolution" stage. This phase can be particularly challenging because it involves addressing and managing any conflicts or disputes that arise during the negotiation. Conflict can stem from differing interests, values, or perceptions, and resolving it effectively is crucial for reaching a successful agreement. It requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to remain calm and composed in potentially tense situations. Furthermore, identifying the underlying causes of the conflict and finding mutually acceptable solutions can be time-consuming and mentally taxing. Negotiators must also be mindful of not letting conflicts escalate to the point of impasse, as this can jeopardize the entire negotiation process. Overall, the "Conflict Resolution" stage demands a high level of patience, empathy, and problem-solving abilities to ensure a positive outcome.

In my opinion the most complex stages of negotiation are: bargaining of course, and resolving conflicts if such appears.

Bargaining with the other side:

This stage can be challenging due to several reasons. I think determining the right balance between asserting your needs and being flexible can be tricky. Finding the sweet spot between proposing for your requirements and suiting the other party's needs can be tough.

Also the issue of value exchange can be complex. You need to ensure that what you're giving is of equal or greater value than what you're receiving.

Resolving any areas of conflict:

Conflicts can arise in any negotiation. Resolving these conflicts can be complicated due to differing perspectives and priorities.

One reason conflict resolution can be challenging is that it often involves emotional factors. People may become attached to their ideas or positions, making it difficult to find a common decision.

Moreover, identifying the root causes of conflicts can be the most complex task in the negotiation process. It may require thorough analysis and open communication. In some cases, conflicts may arise from miscommunication or misunderstandings, which need to be uncovered and addressed.

Everything sounds reasonable, Alexander! Totally agree with you.)

In my opinion, the most difficult part of the negotiation process is gathering information.

In my professional area, this stage is similar to the "Discovery" phase and involves many activities such as

1) Defining the problems and objectives;

2) Planning and conducting effective research;

3) Overview of common research activities to understand the problem space

4) Various techniques to facilitate problem-solving and etc.

For deep understanding, various workshops, meetings and interviews should be conducted with the main objective of gathering existing knowledge from the client.

So, I guess that this stage is complex, time-consuming and require a lot of effort. On the other hand, well collected information will reduce the following negotiation stages.

Good job, Yuliya! Everything sounds reasonable!)

Write 5-10 sentences describing the stages in the negotiation which you find the most complicated. Give reasons. Write your name on a sticky note.
