a challenging behaviour- dishonest and uncooperative

characteristics of a challenging behaviour- rude, hurts other, hurts self, uncooperative

one challenging difficult behaviour- child says "mummy don't let me.."

how I resolve:

1. check with mum what can and can't be done

2. encourage if she really has difficulty

3. make her the lead

One challenging child that i have encountered:

The child has mild autism, he will usually walk around the classroom, he will only sit down when a teacher tells him to. But a few mins later he will tend to walk around again.

How i overcome:

I would give him toys to distract him and also change the toys periodically as he has short attention spent.

-Hashy

A student has the habit of keeping a small piece of glass in her bag and whenever she gets angry or having negative thoughts about herself, she will clench her fist with the small piece of glass in the fist. Other times, she would mention that she wants to die.

I made sure to inform her parent and have a chat about how she is at home to get to know her better, and every single day she reported to me, I will have to check her bag. I also taught her to do the counting 1-10 breathing method whenever her temper gets triggered. Another method I used was to provide her with plain paper and crayons for her to freely express her emotions. At the end of the day before goes home, we would have a chat on how did her day went. and if on that day she manage to control her temper and did not hurt herself, i would compliment her and give her a sticker.

Difficulty to pacify a child's tantrum. He will not shout, scream or throw things instead he will completely ignore my instructions and will refuse to listen to what i am trying to say and he will just simply walk away from the classroom. During an activity, when children are sharing their thoughts, he will easily get upset when he does not get to talk but actually he has already been given the chance to share his thoughts. He will start to cry loudly and will try to stop me from continuing the activity by coming closer to my face, repeating the word "no".

To resolve it, i will make him sit with me or at a cooling corner in the classroom and will also talk to him. I will also count to 10 to let him know that at the count of 10 he needs to try to cool himself down.

One challenging difficult behaviour you have encountered and how do you resolve it?

Have a slow talk with child when he refusing to sleep. Try to separate the child from other children and read a story book for the child to make sure that the child is not disturbing others. Then engcourage the child to sleep then he will have more story time or play time.

Challenging Behaviour:

A child in my class always cries out loud and throw a tantrum whenever it is time to wake up from their nap.

Resolve:

What I will do is to give her a countdown. If she does chooses not to wake up within 10 seconds, I will tell her that I will turn off the lights and leave her alone in the dark while the rest of us are going to go do our toileting.

3. One of the challenging behaviors I have encountered was

Child is a person where he gets very angry/tension/cries whenever it comes to play time or drawing time because his grandma always fetches him during that timing, so he refuses to go home as he wants to stay up with his peers to continue his playtime/drawing.

So what we teachers will do is we will talk to him very nicely and we will tell him that "u can continue this drawing/free play the next day when u come back as grandma is here to fetch you". At times he will still refuse to go home so in that case what we will tell him is "if you put on your shoes and listen, we will give you a piece of paper so u can bring home to do your drawing."

- Child not able to socialise with classmate. Only agrees with what he believes in. Gets angry when classmates has other opinion.

- Goes home to tell parent that he's being bullied and that he feels afraid to go to school. Parents believed without asking and confronted me as to why they're not being updated that their child is being bullied.

- Spoke to parents about how he behaves in class.

- Speak to him about this very often and sits with him whenever possible to see how he socialise with his peers

I have a student who refused to listen and disobeys teacher's instruction most of the time. He will disrespect the teacher's instructions conveyed to the class in general.

I made him played an important role in the class(eg.made him the class leader). With this he listens, calmed himself more often and able to interact better in class.

One challenging behaviour

This boy in my class who just wont listen and cannot sit still and is always running, disturbing others making noises.

How to resolve it ?

Have a reflection corner where he needs to sit down and face the class. He can only leave the reflection corner if he can sit still for 5-10 minutes and tell me why he needs to sit there. I have explained to the class what is this reflection corner, who needs to be there and why.

It helps for a while but this child in my class always need to be go there 3-4 times a day as he will be back to his same behaviour again.

Curiousity/Stubborn

K2 boy, always ask question (why)

Teachers need to answer his every question and he wont give up on his 'Why?'. Ask him to sit seperatly and talk to him one to one after the lesson.

Pannir

The child likes to spit at his friends without any reasons. After finding out from him, he said that he did that because he likes his friends, he wants to play with his friends and he loves his friends.

How do I resolved it?

- I will get him to do self reflection. He will then need to explain to me why he did those actions and why is it wrong to do it to people around him.

- I bring him to one side and talk it with him. After giving plenty of chances, I took away his outdoor time and a bit of his modular time. He will not be joining his other friends in those activities.

- After getting all the details, I will talk and explain to him again. During dismissal, I informed his parents about the situation.

Iffah

This child went to school feeling sad because his sister was at home. He starts to throw tantrum and not wanting to do activity.

I talk to him personally and asked why did he act up. I also called his mum to double confirm and inform mum about his meltdown.

o check the weather forecast before setting up for the water play

o ensure the ratio of 1:10 can be met

o ensure there are sufficient and a variety of play things for the children

o ask the children to repeat the rules before starting to play.

Indoor ( Constructive and Manipulative Play)

The teacher needs to ensure that the play set and materials are enough for the children to play with.

 The teacher needs to reinforce rules to the children.

 Teachers ensure that there is ample space for children to play.

 The teacher may input ideas or show an example when needed.

When planning a play,

The teacher needs to ensure that the materials are enough.

Ensure children will not get bored of waiting if their turn is too long.

A teacher also needs to ensure that children switch roles.

Rules should be set beforehand to ensure that children does not damage the materials.

The play has to have learning qualities and enhance learning development.

Ensure that they are in safe environment when playing.

Teacher will assist the children to play by providing time, space and resources.

When planning for play, a teacher needs to reinforce safety ground rules such as reminding children not to run and push their friends. When handling with resources, a teacher should remind children to take care of the resources and share them with each other. While playing indoors, teacher has to remind children to maintain indoor voice at all times.

While setting up the environment for play, teacher has to prepare a variety of resources, rotate the resources from time to time and allocate sufficient space for children to play comfortably. Teacher has to encourage children to keep the environment clean and tidy by getting them to put away the resources used after playing.

Provide a brief description of what a teacher needs to do when planning for play

When planning for outdoor play, its important for teachers to actually sit all the children down and firstly, ensure everyone is attentive to her. Once she has gotten everyone’s attention, she has to lay out some ground rules for the students before their play time. For example reminding them “no pushing or fighting”. Especially when students are doing relay or race, they tend to get competitive and sometimes when kids lose, they tend to get upset or will start crying. So teachers can also remind students that it’s just for fun and that they may try again next time. Teachers also need to ensure that there are adequate space for students to move around. They also have to ensure that there are enough resources. For example if they want to do hopscotch using hula hoops, they must ensure that there are enough hula hoops.

When planning for indoor play, teachers will also need to layout some ground rules. And to ensure that students are group in no more than 4. And since they’re indoor, students will also need to maintain their noise level which is also to ensure they next class is not being disrupted. Teachers will also need to be very vigilant as play time is also the time where incidents can occur as students may get upset quite easily.

Staffs will also need to ensure that the space provided are very safe.

Group 4 ( Nornabilah , Marzillah and Krishanthini )
