No More Pennies?

On Sunday, February 9th, President Donald Trump declared that all U.S. mints would discontinue the penny. He believes that this change will help decrease the United States's debt. However, many people believe that this change will actually increase our debt. By taking away the penny, more nickels will have to be made even though they cost more to make than pennies do.

A pair of whales are making a baffling journey along the US Gulf Coast

A pair of adult female right whales, Koala and Curlew, have mystified researchers this winter as they cruised south along the Florida coast, then made a surprise appearance this week off Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

Pregnant female North Atlantic right whales migrate south each winter from the waters off New England and Nova Scotia to give birth in the warmer waters off Florida and Georgia.

Sometimes other whales also make the journey to the Southeast, but this pair of whales put their own spin on the trip. They were seen off Perdido Pass near the Alabama-Florida border on Sunday.

It’s unusual for right whales to travel around the southern tip of Florida and into the Gulf, and it’s also unusual for two adult females to travel together, said Julie Albert, with the Blue World Research Institute and director of the Right Whale Sighting Network. “The fact that they’re still traveling together is fascinating."

Deep water fish spotted in shallow water

A very rare fish sighting is making a splash on social media. A deep-sea anglerfish, with its mouthful of sharp teeth, was spotted near the surface of the water near the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa earlier this month. The videos and pictures were taken by Condrik Tenerife a Spanish NGO that researches sharks and rays in the Canary Islands and marine photographer David Jara Borguña. According to the organization, the fish is a so-called "black seadevil" known by its scientific name Melanocetus johnsonii. They typically swim between 650 and 6,500 feet below the ocean's surface. This range is known as the Bathypelagic Zone or midnight zone. According to the NOAA, the temperature there remains constant – around 39 degrees – because sunlight is unable to penetrate water at that depth. Water pressure can climb over 5,850 pounds per square inch. The research team said there have been very few sightings of this kind of fish, and they aren't sure why she was so far from the depths of the ocean.

Ed Sheeran busted by Indian police for busking without permission

Ed Sheeran took to a busy street in southern India this weekend to surprise fans with a live performance but police soon swooped and pulled the plug on the British singer, saying he hadn’t received permission. Local police said they had previously denied Sheeran permission to busk in the area, and that a citizen had called a helpline to report the infringement once he had started playing. He is set to perform two more shows in India before heading to China and the United Arab Emirates.

Patrick Mahomes takes blame for Super Bowl LIX rout, he promises, "Chiefs will be back"

Mahomes only had just thirty three passing yards in the first half of the Super Bowl. He had three touchdowns as in the second half, but it was too late, and his Kansas City Chiefs were blown out, 40-22. The Chiefs were going for their third consecutive Super Bowl title. The Eagles sacked Mahomes six times, and completely threw him off his game. While he did not necessarily get help from his offensive line, Mahomes took the blame for the tough loss.

Dominant Eagles defense fueled by Chiefs' three-peat talk

NEW ORLEANS -- Multiple Eagles defensive players said they used the Kansas City Chiefs' talk of a three-peat as incentive in Philadelphia's dominant Super Bowl LIX performance on Sunday night.

"That was motivation because it was kind of a slap to us," Eagles veteran defensive end Brandon Graham said. "It was like, they ain't seen us yet. So, we heard that all week. And when the game came, execution was on point and together."

Kendrick Lamar delivers final blow to Drake in controversial and explosive Super Bowl Half-Time Show

https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/music/2025/02/09/kendrick-lamar-halftime-show-review-super-bowl/

Following an intense rap beef between Kendrick and Drake in 2024, Kendrick was slated to become the Super Bowl Half-Time performer. The rap battle resulted in the release of several hit tracks, most notably "Not Like Us", which took home 5 Grammys earlier this year. Kendrick was generally considered to be the winner of the feud, with provocative and memorable lyrics that paint an unpleasant picture of his opponent. Before the Super Bowl, it was debated whether or not this conflict would play a role in his performance. Samuel L. Jackson played a role in the show, dressed as Uncle Sam. At one point, Kendrick did a fake out where it seemed like he was about to play Not Like Us, but said he would get sued, before playing the song anyways to a thunderous crowd a few minutes later. He ended the performance with a massive "Game Over" sign, one last move to assert dominance over Drake. The performance also contained more subtle criticisms of the state America is in right now, with speculation some of it is directed towards the current Trump administration. Overall, the event was as controversial yet praised as one could have expected it to be.

Dalton Knecht is going back to the Lakers.

Dalton Knecht was supposed to be traded to the Hornets for Mark Williams. The NBA trade deadline was near, and the Lakers have been making big moves this week, also acquiring Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis. The lakers were going to trade away Dalton Knecht for Mark Williams too, but the Hornets lied about William's health so it didn't go through.

Anthony Davis out multiple weeks with adductor strain

Dallas Mavericks star power forward/center Anthony Davis is expected to sit out multiple weeks because of a left adductor strain, sources told ESPN on Sunday night.

His absence could stretch to a month, sources said, because of an injury that cut short his spectacular debut with his new franchise. Davis, the headliner of the Mavs' return from the controversial trade of 25-year-old superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, exited Saturday's win over the Houston Rockets with 1:37 left in the third quarter after recording 26 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks in 31 minutes.

He was ruled out of Monday's home game against the Sacramento Kings when the Mavs released the evening injury report.

Davis, 31, downplayed concern about the injury postgame, saying he was "very confident" that it was not a significant setback. Davis sat out the previous five games -- his final three with the Lakers and first two with the Mavs -- because of an abdominal strain.

Merciless Philadelphia Eagles dismantle Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl

Merciless Philadelphia Eagles dismantle Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl

Kansas City Chiefs 22–40 Philadelphia Eagles

Seven years after winning their first Vince Lombardi trophy, the Philadelphia Eagles are back on top of the NFL summit. Behind a MVP performance from quarterback Jalen Hurts and a defensive masterclass that harried, hit and harassed Patrick Mahomes into one of the worst games of his career, the Eagles steamrolled to a 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night in New Orleans that wasn’t as narrow as the scoreline suggests.

The 59th Super Bowl was the second meeting in three years between Philadelphia and Kansas City on the NFL’s biggest stage, with the Eagles still nursing the scars of the first installment: a heart-stopping 38-35 Chiefs win in Arizona in which a hobbled Mahomes orchestrated a near-perfect second half to overturn a 10-point deficit that erased Hurts’ career-best performance. This one went the other way – and wasn’t nearly as close
