The first light is more like a light from a lightbulb. While the other light is the more negative light. The negative light is like when a living thing dies. It's this light because it says in the book how the flies one by one dies.

The light in the hallway, the light of the lightning bugs, and the light in the elevator. These references have negative connotations, especially the lightning bugs. Which bring back a memory of Will’s childhood with Shawn. When they would catch lightning bugs, put them in a jar, and watch them light up until all of their lights went out. Like how Shawn’s light had gone out.

On 68 it mentions the bright sun light which is usually a positive thing, but in this situation it rubbed in his mothers grief. On 69 there is a yellow light the lined the hallways from the light bugs Will and Shawn used to catch. This is somewhat negative because it brings back the memories of Will and Shawn that now will no longer be created.

In “In the Kitchen” the light is coming through the window showing the struggling mother while in “The Yellow Light” there’s lights lining the hallway and the light on the firefly. I think these references all have negative connotations because it shows the guilt the mother feels, the lights paving the way to what Will has to go do, and the light shutting off in the fireflies which represents death.

The word light is used 3 times throughout the two pages, first one shows the light from the sun which is the light that moves everything around the world, it is also related to happiness, the second is when he sees the yellow light from the hallway which reminded Will of old time with his brother, which leads to our last reference, Will has flashbacks of how times were before Shawn was killed, which can affect in a bad way because it can impulsate the hate that Will already has against Riggs.

The light had negative connotations on those pages. It first showed his mother, who was filled with guilt over her son’s death. Then it brought back another memory of Shawn, in which they trapped the fireflies and their lights, watched them struggle, and then let their lights go out.

First was the sun, then the hallways lights, which are dimmer, then the lightning bugs, which are mentioned to go out completely. They have a positive connotation at first, but it progressively gets more and more negative until it is just dark.

9) What are a few different types of “light” that Will mentions on pages 68 and 69? Do these references to light have positive or negative connotations?
