Past perfect continuous

Form: subject+had+been+main verb-ing

We use the past perfect continuous:

 

▫️to put emphasis on the duration of an action whivh started and dinished in the past before another action or stated time in the past(ex. had been working at the company for five years when i got the promotion)

 

▫️for an action which lasted for some time in the past and whose result was visible in the past(ex. Jenny was very tired because she had been doing her homework all afternoon)

The past perfect refers to a time earlier than before now. It is used to make it clear that one event happened before another in the past. The Past Perfect tense in English is composed of two parts: the past tense of the verb to have (had) + the past participle of the main verb.

We use the past perfect for an action which finished before another past action

or before a stated time in the past:

After Sofie had finished her work, she went to lunch.

 

 

For an action which finished in the past and whose result was visible at a later point in the past: she had faile her exam and she was really upset.

The past perfect continuous tense (also known as the past perfect progressive tense) shows that an action that started in the past continued up until another time in the past. The past perfect continuous tense is constructed using had been + the verb’s present participle (root + -ing).

(I had been watching TV for an hour when I remembered I had forgotten to call my friends)

We use past perfect continuos for an action which lasted for some time in the past and whose results was visible in the past. ( Sharon was very tired because she had been painting her room all day)

The past perfect, is a verb tense used to talk about actions that were completed before some point in the past.(she had passed her test and she was really happy )

We use the past perfect:

For an action which finished before another past action or before a stated time in a past

(Tom had finished his work by noon,)
