A linguist does not look at language in the same way an English teacher does. A linguist allows room for more flexibility because they are concerned with describing how language is used on a daily-basis by ordinary speakers. However, an English teacher has a rigid view of language in the sense that they are judgemental about what you can and cannot say. That is because they believe one should use the grammar outlined in grammar books.
