In military school:

- Moore was surprised with the fact that they had to wake up at 5:30 am (page 86)

- Everyone was treated harshly, for example when he refused to wake up eight teenagers picked his mattress up off the top bunk and turned it over dropping him five feet to the cold, hard, green-tiled floor.

- Moore couldn’t take the harsh training in the military so by the end of the fourth day at military school, he had run away four times ( page 90).

The type of living in the military is described in the fifth chapter, where the atmosphere of the army is shown. Moore was woken at 5:30 via shouts that rang through his hallway (85:5).

Living in the military was overwhelming, strict, and stressful the author mentions on page 85 line 8 " even in the dark I could see that his face was masked with panic" page 96 paragraph 3 line 8 "It was a different psychological environment, where my normal expectations were inverted, where leadership was honored and class clowns were ostracized."

Moore no longer had control over his actions, but must simply follow a strict set of rules that encompass everything from when he goes to sleep, to how he walks, & to how quickly he eats. This disciplinary regime is undoubtedly oppressive, and it is little wonder that Moore attempts to escape it. Moore simply has to obey the rules.
