Important Types of transducers

Transducer is a very crucial element of ultrasonic instrumentation system. It includes piezoelectric component, which transforms electrical signals to mechanical vibrations and vice versa. Transducers are fabricated to be efficient transmitters as well as receivers.

Transducers performing well in application A will not produce desired results in application B or C.

The concept of bandwidth and frequency range also needs understanding.

• Central frequency depends on the backing material.

• High damped transducers respond to frequencies that are below or above the central frequency

• Broad frequency range offers transducers high resolving power

• Low damped transducers exhibit narrow frequency, poor resolving power but great resolving power

• Low frequencies offer great energy and penetration but high frequencies provide decreased penetration but great sensitivity to tiny discontinuities

• Higher frequency transducers used with appropriate instrumentation is capable to dramatically enhance thickness measurement capabilities and flaw resolution

Types of transducers

Piezoelectric transducer manufacturer produces different kinds to enhance system resolution or sensitivity.

1. Contact transducers - These are basically hand manipulated and employed for direct contact inspections. Design is ergonomic making it easy to grip as well as move along the surface. The wear plates are replaceable, which helps to increase their handy life. Air between transducer and parts being inspected is eliminated using coupling materials like grease, oil, water, or some commercial materials.

2. Immersion transducers - There is no need for contact with the component. They are designed to work in liquid environment, so all connections are water-proof and sealed. It helps to attain more sound energy in the water. You can buy immersion transducers with cylindrically focused or planer lens. It will help to enhance axial resolution and sensitivity via concentrating sound energy to a small area.
