We usually serve some green tea or coffee with sweets when inviting guests at home. We never say "Help yourself to drinks in the fridge." to guests, and they never open it because they know it's rude. Serving food and drinks is the house owner's task. Many people tend to stand on ceremony in Japan. So guests should follow the rules.

We normally break the ice by asking about the health and work of the guests after serving snacks at the table.
