To office:

I respect all the rules of the University. I believe that the rules are to be good things. I understand that we are trying to be more academic. But I am afraid that banning words can not be the solution. Actually, it might be the opposite. It makes people more focused on these words, leading to use more often. Moreover, these words are really beneficial for certain situations for our students performs better.

Please, consider those thoughts for your final decision.

Sincerely,

I am shocked with this policy and would like the university to reconsider it, as for me it is a step backward. University is a place where we are going through learning/educating, expecting such communication from a community "under development" is counter-productive. This is the place where students need to feel comfortable with themselves, including in how they speak.

Part 2: You are a professor at this university and are shocked by this announcement. Write a response email, saying why you think this is a bad idea and why these words shouldn't be viewed as negative.

As decided by the university, we are banning from now on the words that indicate hesitation phenomenon. The university expect us to be more efficient in our communication by applying this policy, forcing us to avoid words such as "uh", "like", "um", etc. It will be challenging, but we hope to see real benefits soon.

Hello everyone

I am announcing the new rule, which is banning all the pauses and hesitation words. I understand that it is part of our life. But also we are preferring next generation and become following academic people, so we should try to be more formal. It will be a complex challenge, but it will be worth it.

Thank you all for your support and understanding

Sincerely,

You work for a university in the office of University Relations. The university has decided to ban all words that indicate hesitation phenomenon (um, like, uh, er, etc.) for ALL students, professors, and staff. Your boss asks you to write an email to everyone in the university to inform them of this new policy. What does this email look like?
