The first edition of the so-called Olympic Games of the modern era was held in Athens, the capital of Greece, starting on April 6, 1896.
The Summer Olympics program consists of 36 sports, 51 disciplines and 339 competitions.
Various sporting events, combats and chariot races were held in these games. Footrace, pentathlon, long jump, discus throw, javelin, footrace and wrestling and equestrian events were held.

During the closing ceremonies on Sunday night, IOC President Thomas Bach declared the Games closed. The next Summer Games will be held in Paris in 2024.
As in competitions during this year's Games, fans were not present at the closing ceremonies due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Olympic flame was extinguished as fireworks shot into the sky.
On the final day of competition, athletes from the United States collected three more gold medals, giving the Americans a 39-38 lead over China in the final gold medal tally.
