I asked my grandpa about the weather when he was in his childhood. He told me that winter was beautiful, he saw snow everywhere which is very unusual nowadays, because this winter we saw snow for one day and it was for few hours because it started to rain. Winter used to be freezing but now its above zero. Also summer changed. Summer got hotter compared to grandpas summer. 50 years ago temperature hardly raised to 30 degrees but now it isn't problem we usually have 32 degrees for weeks.

My parents remember the winter in Slovakia, that the winter was full of snow and frost. Today we have winter, which is more like a rainy autumn.

Winter in Slovakia used to be much colder than today. My parents told me that it was snowing all the time but now it barely snows in the winter.

My grandfather told me that although he's not a scientist, he has lived long enough to see that something’s different. It’s not just the weather—it’s the land, the water, the trees. Everything feels out of sync. Back in the day he was young, they could rely on the seasons to guide their planting and harvesting. Now, even the farmers don’t know what to expect.

My mother said that what captures her attention in present is that the sudden downpours cause chaos in the city. Whether phenomena are very intense now. In general the rainfall is not very frequent now but when it rains, in combination with the burned forests the results are a disaster for the city. Water has no place to go

I think it is a common belief in Greec and not only in Acharnes that we didn’t have such long periods of dryness. The heat is an intense phenomena now. In general the climate felt more balanced and predictable in earlier times.

My father says that flooding was very uncommon in the past because the rains were milder and in general the wheather a little more predictable. Now the seasons feel out of sync: Spring is the shortest season, Summers start a lot earlier and the Winters are milder.

I googled it and it turns out that Autumns began earlier and brought regular rain, unlike today when it seems to skip straight to winter. Seasons are all mixed up now I think

What I think surprised me by asking my mother, is that nights used to cool down even during summer. Now in the summer days the city still feels hot even after the sun sets.

I hear that some decades ago we rarely faced extreme weather events. Summers are intense heatwaves, frequent wildfires that have burned down most of the forests in our country.

I asked my father and he said that rainfall was more consistent back then. The rains used to be gentler and spread throughout the year, which doesnt happen now. Nowadays its sudden heavy storms causing problems.

Summers in Acharnes were cooler with refreshing nights and colder winters, sometimes bringing snow from Parnitha mountain which is close.

I asked my grandma about diference between winter in her times and now. Winters used to be much colder then they are now. There was much more snow, so they had lots of fun. It was also longer. Winter used to start at November, and ended at begining of March. Now we have barely two months of snow. I really miss old Winter.

I asked an older member of my family about the climate some decades before and the responses were almost different than now especially in winter time. In the past had more rains and snows during the winter and the temperature was lower. There were no such severe weather phenomena as now. People knew that from November to March they would have a lot of rain and snow in the mountainous areas with enough altitude , now these months of the year are warmer with little rain and minimal snowfalls.

Dear students,

Describe briefly the typical climate in your city. Interview an older family member about how they remember the climate in the same location when they were young, and discuss any observed changes over time in terms of temperature, precipitation, seasonal patterns or extreme weather events.
