The United States denied any support for Iran's nuclear power. The U.S. stopped nuclear transport to Iran through their country and asked other nuclear suppliers to not engage with Iran. This was all done because the U.S. simply did not trust Iran.

Many asked, "why does Iran need nuclear power?". Iran wants to be able to compete with other countries. They have lots of oil, but are energy poor. Oil is not infinate and they eventually will need a new energy source

While Iran has a high supply of oil, they have much less energy in other places. They are "oil rich and energy poor." Iran has to diversify its energy "portfolio" in order to boost their economy any further.
